As an officially licensed artist for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, my work is inspired by the rich traditions, enduring legacy, and vibrant spirit of this remarkable community. From the iconic “Ski-U-Mah” cheer to the inspiring “Row the Boat” philosophy, these symbols of perseverance and unity embody what it means to be a Gopher. The nickname itself, born in the 1800s through a satirical cartoon, reflects Minnesota’s heritage of resilience and ingenuity. My goal as an artist is to capture this essence on canvas—infusing each piece with the energy, passion, and pride that define the Golden Gophers and their fans. I would also like to thank my brother and sister-in-law, Sean and Brooke Barnard, who live in Minneapolis and have been passionate Gopher fans and enthusiastic supporters of my work. Their encouragement and dedication to celebrating the Gopher spirit have been a constant source of inspiration.
When I create, I think about the families and friends who gather to celebrate the Gophers’ legacy, whether it’s sharing memories of a first game with a grandparent or rallying around a table filled with laughter and tradition. Through layers of paint—added and removed in search of harmony—I aim to bring that same sense of connection and history into my work. My art is a celebration of the heart and soul of Minnesota, paying homage to its storied sports history while honoring the bonds that unite generations of fans. It’s my hope that each piece resonates with the passion and pride of those who carry the Golden Gophers spirit forward.
